Junior Hurling Championship Final 2012

Ballinkillen 0-8 Palatine 1-03

Ballinkillen Junior hurlers followed on the wins earlier in the year by the seniors in the Kilkenny League and the u-16s earlier in the week by winning the Junior hurling championship in Dr. Cullen Park on Sunday last in blustery conditions with the wind blowing into the tunnel end not allowing any great advantage to either team. The ground conditions were excellent allowing for good hurling.

Both teams went to their task with great vigour in a truly sporting manner making it easy for the referee to control. From the start Palatine were quicker and stronger but Ballinkillen hurled more efficiently and controlled the opposition using greater awareness of the use of the ball. The game was in its 10th minute when David Wall opened the score and put a second on the board before Palatine wing forward ran through and could have scored a goal only for his kicked shot to go over the bar, Tommy Cummins stepped up next to get a point from play after good work in mid field by Tomas Kinsella, Palatine were doing all the attacking and should have been in front only for good defending by James Cox and Paddy Foley, along with Shane Farrell and Pakie Hughes.

Podge Ryan finished the first half scoring with a nice point out on the wing to leave the half time score 0-4 to 0-2 for the Ballinkillen men. It was very evident that if Ballinkillen were to win this they had to move the ball better and they succeeded in doing this in the second half, not allowing the Palatine team to run with the ball. Ballinkillen extended their lead with a free from David Wall from the stand side all of 55mts out with a cross wind - a good score. Ballinkillen made a number of changes half way through the second half introducing Niall Quirke and Liam Nolan. This introduction helped give fresh legs to the attack with Quirke scoring from play and Nolan moving an amount of ball.

Palatine made their own changes, one of which was introducing former Ballinkillen stalwart Martin Farrell who nearly upset the cart only for a low goal-bound shot to be well stopped by a defence who had James Cox working diligently, winning and delivering good ball to the forwards, Paddy Foley at centre back now. Podge Ryan completed the Ballinkillen scoring on the 50th minute and looking in control but Palatine never gave up and got their reward with 5 minutes remaining in scoring a goal to leave the Ballinkillen side and supporters on tender hooks for the remainder of the game. In fairness to the team they never let go of the lead and are deserving champions with stern performances from James Cox, Paddy Foley and Pakie Hughes in defence, Vivian Foley in keeping former county player Liam Kenny at bay, himself playing well. Up front David Wall lead by example, Tommy Cummins won good ball along with Podge Ryan and Padraig Kinsella working hard.

Ballinkillen were deserving champions and will look forward to the intermediate ranks in 2013 with enthusiasm, well done lads!
