Ballinkillen 4-17 Shamrocks (Offaly) 1-9

Ballinkillen started their competitive year in a positive, work like manner last Saturday in the Leinster League against Shamrocks of Offaly, winning on a score line of 2-17 to 1-09. Ballinkillen won the important exchanges early on, playing with the wind into the school end. Ballinkillen started with three frees from both wings by Peter Minchin before Shamrocks opened their scoring on the 8th minute with a point and on the 9th minute a long range free went to the net after indecision by the Ballinkillen defence. Marty Dalton levelled on the 15th minute and a minute later scored Bllinkillen's first goal of the day. From here on Ballinkillen controlled the half with points from Craig Wall, James Kinsella and John Ryan, all three scores coming from good work and support play from the team. On the 25th minute Marty scored again after the ball was worked beautifully up the field. Peter Minchin scored his 4th free for a foul on Craig Wall and Daryl Roberts scored the last point of the half after a pass from Andrew Gaule. Leaving the half time score 2-09 to 1-03 for Ballinkillen.

On the restart Shamrocks scored in the first minute from a 65 and looked like they were going to show intent after the half time break. Both teams traded the next 6 points tit for tat as each team slotted over a score the other responded to leave the distance between them the same with scores from Darren Dalton, Daryl Roberts, Craig Wall, John Ryan and Peter Minchin. The score that put distance between the teams came in the 20th minute of the half when Darren Dalton finished off a move for Ballinkillen's third goal; this score seemed to knock the fight out of the Shamrocks team. Ballinkillen, with Points from Sean Whelan (making his senior debut - well done Sean) and Craig Wall. The last score coming from Darren Dalton working his way through the defence to score his third goal, giving him a tally of 3-01 for the day.

Ballinkillen worked hard in tough underfoot conditions never allowing the opposition time or space on the ball. Michael Ryan and James Kinsella in the half back line with Padraig Kinsella cleared a lot of ball, John Hughes in behind clearing up were always in control. At mid field John Ryan and Andrew Gaule moved forward with purpose to give the forwards a platform as Peter Minchin worked efficiently off the ball and slotted over the important frees. The opposition could not cope with the movement of Marty Dalton, Daryl Roberts and Craig Wall.
