U-16 Hurling League Division 1 Round 1: MLR v Ballinkillen

This game saw a physically superior MLR press home their early advantage with key goals from brothers Chris and Jon Nolan. Ciaran Whelan was superb for the visitors and struck over 3 frees without reply. 'Rangers kept pressing and with Dara Tobin supplying the forward line, scores continued right up to halftime. Sean McDermott at centre back was a colossus and was ably assisted by Eoin Kavanagh and Barry Hickey in the Ballinkillen rearguard. The halftime score was 3-9 to 0-4 for the home team. In the second half Colin Bolger and Thomas Dowling swapped positions for Ballinkillen and the move worked well for both. Thomas hit some long deliveries into the forward line and both Mark Treacy and Shane Nolan benefitted from these with scores. MLR though continued to tack on scores particularly Niall Lynam and a lovely long range score from Tony Lawlor. MLR were well deserving winners but the score didn't do justice to the hurling of the visitors in particular Ciaran Dowling, Eoin Quirke and Cormac Lomax.
